Description

The Southern Pinwheel Galaxy (M83 / NGC5236) is a barred spiral galaxy in the constellation borders of Centaurus and Hydra and is approximately 15 million light-years away from Earth. M83 is a massive starburst galaxy producing stars at a fast rate. The pink clouds of hydrogen gas that dot the galaxy's spiral arms are the nurseries where new stars are being born.
